Background of the Study
Community radio broadcasts in Nigeria serve as vital sources of localized information and cultural expression, particularly in regions where access to national media may be limited. This study assesses the morphosyntactic features present in community radio broadcasts, with a focus on how regional accents influence language structure. In Nigerian community radio, hosts often blend indigenous linguistic elements with Standard Nigerian English to communicate effectively with local audiences (Okoro, 2023). Morphosyntactic features such as sentence structure, verb conjugation, and the use of regional idioms vary significantly across different parts of Nigeria, reflecting the rich linguistic diversity of the country (Afolabi, 2024). This research compares broadcasts from several regions, analyzing how morphological and syntactic choices adapt to regional linguistic norms. The study also explores the role of community radio in preserving indigenous language features while simultaneously promoting a standardized form of communication. By combining corpus analysis with interviews of radio broadcasters, the research aims to document these linguistic phenomena and provide recommendations for enhancing communication effectiveness in community radio (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the cultural importance of community radio, there is limited research on the morphosyntactic variations influenced by regional accents in Nigerian broadcasts. Inconsistencies in language use may lead to comprehension challenges among diverse audiences and hinder the preservation of indigenous linguistic features (Okoro, 2023). This gap restricts the development of strategies to improve communication and support language preservation efforts. Furthermore, the interplay between local accents and standardized language in broadcasts remains underexplored, impeding efforts to reconcile cultural identity with broader communication goals (Afolabi, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by systematically analyzing morphosyntactic features in community radio and offering insights for enhancing both clarity and cultural representation (Ibrahim, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To document morphosyntactic features in Nigerian community radio broadcasts.
To compare these features across different regional accents.
To recommend strategies for improving linguistic clarity while preserving indigenous characteristics.
Research Questions:
What morphosyntactic features are characteristic of community radio broadcasts?
How do regional accents influence these linguistic features?
What strategies can enhance communication in community radio while respecting regional diversity?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic features in Nigerian community radio, highlighting the impact of regional accents. The findings will benefit broadcasters, linguists, and policymakers by offering insights into effective communication strategies that honor cultural diversity and promote language preservation (Ibrahim, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to community radio broadcasts from selected Nigerian regions and does not extend to national or online media.
Definitions of Terms:
Morphosyntax: The study of word formation and sentence structure.
Regional Accents: Variations in pronunciation and syntax specific to geographic areas.
Community Radio: Local radio stations serving specific communities.
